  • Skylar’s Quilt

This is my granddaughter’s second quilt.  It was pieced when she was 7.  She got the quilting bug after being surrounded by the quilts I made and always wanting to “hang out” in my sewing studio.  When she was 5 years old she Skylar's bricks and roseswanted to sew on my machine.  I gave her a some 4” squares and had to watch every stitch she made to make sure little fingers did not get in the way.  I had to put the foot pedal on a stool, a pillow behind her back and she could still hardly reach the machine…but she was determined.  I thought she would get tired of this very soon, but found out that the more she sewed, the more she wanted to sew.  I decided if she was going to do all that sewing, we might as make a quilt out of those little squares…so that was her first quilt.  She pieced the top (with help) and I quilted and bound it for her.  Imagine her thrill when we showed it at our local quilt guild show and she got a blue ribbon, as did all of the Junior Quilters.  When she did this second quilt, she had a choice…go to the quilt store and get fabric, or pick it out of my stash.  She decided to shop in Grandma’s Stash.  We had time to talk about colors and prints and designs.  This second quilt was easier for her to sew because my new machine had a speed regulator and I put it on a slow speed for her.  She pieced the entire top on this one and I quilted and bound it.  This, too she entered into the next quilt show and now she has two blue ribbons!  (By the way, I have no ribbons.)

My mother-in law had a special birthday and so I decided to make her a memory quilt.  With the help of her daughter, I sent out squares to all of her friends and relatives in California and Illinois.  After sending out the squares, with a note

that if they know anyone else who would like a square, to let me know, it was like Christmas every day when I went to the mailbox.  The squares not only came back, I also got many more names of people to send them to.  (As an added benefit the family was able to touch base with people whom they had not seen for years.  It is such a warm feeling knowing that these people have all written these notes for her and I get to put it together.  In her honor, the label said it all…”May this quilt hold traces of those who signed…reminding you though out the years of our enduring love and friendship.”  She continues to enjoy it and we continue to enjoy her.

Tatum's QuiltI made this for my son and daughter-in-law before their baby was born.  I loved the little children in the print.  I actually made two different quilts for her, using different patterns with this fabric with these cute little stick figure kids.  They served well when she was a baby, and now that she has turned 5 I still see that quilt in the car…it is the perfect size to cover up with in her car seat on a chilly morning on her way to school.

Mom's QuiltMy mom down sized and moved from an area she had been for more than 30 years to be closer to me.  This was a difficult move.  I wanted her to have something to remind her that she was loved by her friends and family and so I sent out squares to everyone, asking them to write a little note, and sign the square and send it back.  She is the matriarch of our family and I got an amazing amount of responses from people delighted to contribute.  I was happy to see that about 98% of the squares I sent out came back with notes and signatures.  (I had one aunt who was upset because she did not get a square (it was lost in the mail) and so she did hers later and I added it to the back near the label.  It was great laying it out and piecing it, grouping friends and families together.  She gets it out often and enjoys reading the notes and messages from everyone.  (It is amazing to see how much some people can write in a 4” square).  The label sent the message from us all… ”Warm yourself with this quilt and all of the love from your family and friends”

    Jelly Braid

This quilt was made for my granddaughter Aby……. It’s called the “Jelly Braid”.  It was for her graduation from High School.    She lives 3000 miles away in Georgia.  It was so quick to make, and I just used scraps from my fabric stash.  The only thing I had to buy was the flannel for the back.  She really loved receiving it, since I couldn’t travel there she said it was the next best thing, and she will always think of Grandma when she uses it.

    Dindy's Raggy quilt

    The “Raggy Quilt”

This is one of my favorite quilts to make.  It is easy and goes together very fast.

It is a “quilt as you go style”, needs no batting, and made in flannel, very cozy & warm.

I’ve made about 10 different color combinations for friends and family.

This one was for my daughter Marylou.

    Noah Quilt.

I made this with Noah’s Ark fabric for my grandson “Noah”, on a trip to the beach for a quilting weekend

with my quilt group.  It’s always more fun when you have friends around to help you make decisions.

    Chase's Boot Wall Hanging

My daughter wanted to decorate her nursery with a western theme…what fun it was to make this wall hanging for my soon-to-be grandson.  I had saved the pattern from a quilt our guild had made for an outgoing president years ago…what fun to use it again!  He is a big boy now…almost 4 and it still hangs in his room.

    Lori's Star Quilt

One of my good friends, Charlotte, took me to my first quilt show shortly after I started quilting.  It was the first time I had seen batiks and I was enthralled at them.  I walked past a booth that had large rolls of 2 1/2” strips several times and finally bought a roll on our way out.  I had no idea what I would do with them and so I kept them for months and months, until I finally found the perfect pattern.  I realized that the 5” square exchange at our guild gave me what I needed to start this quilt.  As much as I had fallen in love with this fabric, once I started to make it I realized it had to be for my daughter, Lorianna…it would be perfect in her new home, and I wanted her to have it.  Part of the fun of making this quilt for her was thinking about her all of the time I was working on it.  By the time I was finished enjoying the quilt making process, I was ready to give it to her.
