Skylar’s Quilt

This is my granddaughter’s second quilt.  It was pieced when she was 7.  She got the quilting bug after being surrounded by the quilts I made and always wanting to “hang out” in my sewing studio.  When she was 5 years old she wanted to sew on my machine.  I gave her a some 4” squares and had to watch every stitch she made to make sure little fingers did not get in the way.  I had to put the foot pedal on a stool, a pillow behind her back and she could still hardly reach the machine…but she was determined.  I thought she would get tired of this very soon, but found out that the more she sewed, the more she wanted to sew.  I decided if she was going to do all that sewing, we might as make a quilt out of those little squares…so that was her first quilt.  She pieced the top (with help) and I quilted and bound it for her.  Imagine her thrill when we showed it at our local quilt guild show and she got a blue ribbon, as did all of the Junior Quilters.  When she did this second quilt, she had a choice…go to the quilt store and get fabric, or pick it out of my stash.  She decided to shop in Grandma’s Stash.  We had time to talk about colors and prints and designs.  This second quilt was easier for her to sew because my new machine had a speed regulator and I put it on a slow speed for her.  She pieced the entire top on this one and I quilted and bound it.  This, too she entered into the next quilt show and now she has two blue ribbons!  (By the way, I have no ribbons.)
